There are choices inside the category. Galvanized is the plain silver finish. Black or green vinyl-coated mesh and framework blend into planting and look better beside a house. Privacy can be added with slats woven through the mesh or with windscreen fabric, though both increase wind load on the posts. Front yards are a separate question. Cities often limit or refuse chain link facing a street, so we check before pricing one.

Yes, at the right height and with the bottom secured. Five or six feet stops most jumpers. A tension wire or bottom rail, or mesh buried a little below grade, deals with diggers.
How long does galvanized chain link last?
A long time in this dry climate, since rust needs moisture. Coated mesh adds another layer of protection. We do not put a number on it because wire gauge, coating and sprinkler exposure all change the result.
