A wood fence in San Jose has to cope with half a year of sun and a base that sits in clay. We choose the lumber grade, the post type and the footing depth with both in mind.
Redwood and cedar are the two woods we build with most in San Jose. Each has heartwood that stands up to decay and insects without treatment, and each stays flatter than pine through a rainless summer. The grade matters as much as the species. Boards with more heartwood and fewer knots cost more and hold up longer, and we show you the grades side by side so the choice is yours.
The style follows the lot. On a shared back line, most owners pick a 6-foot dog-ear or flat-top privacy fence, often with a cap and trim. Board-on-board closes the gaps that open when boards shrink in August. Picket and low rail fences suit front yards, where the city holds height down. We set pressure-treated or steel posts, because the post is the part that sits in wet clay.
Two habits add years to a wood fence here. Keep the bottom of the boards off the soil and out of the sprinkler pattern, and seal the wood once it has dried. We leave a gap or fit a treated kick board at the base, and we shape the concrete at each post so water sheds away from it.
Wood & cedar fences in San Jose: common questions
Is redwood or cedar better for a San Jose fence?
Both work well in this climate. Redwood is the local tradition and is easy to find in several grades. Cedar is lighter in color and weight. Either one outlasts untreated fir or pine. Your budget and the look you want usually decide it.
Should the posts be wood or steel?
Pressure-treated wood posts cost less and look traditional. Galvanized steel posts cost more and do not rot at the soil line, which is where wood posts fail in adobe clay. Steel can be boxed in so the fence still looks like wood from both sides.
How soon can a new wood fence be stained?
When the boards are dry enough to take it. Drip water on the wood. If it soaks in, go ahead. If it beads, give it more time. In the dry months that can be a matter of weeks.
