San Jose is not a town of private boat docks, and we will not pretend it is. The water close by is public. Alviso Marina County Park opens onto the sloughs at the south end of San Francisco Bay. Vasona Lake sits in Los Gatos. Lexington, Calero and Coyote Lake are reservoirs with county parks on their shores. The Guadalupe River, Coyote Creek and Los Gatos Creek cross the valley floor. Anderson Reservoir near Morgan Hill has been drained while its dam is rebuilt.
So most of this work is fence and hardware at the water's edge, not docks on open water. We supply and fit posts, railings, gates and fence sections for a pier or platform on a private pond, a ranch reservoir near Gilroy, Hollister or San Martin, or a shared lake inside a planned community. We also fence yards that back onto a creek or a levee. We do not build marinas and we do not build or repair boats.
Whoever owns or manages the water sets the rules. On the reservoirs and creeks that is usually Valley Water, with Santa Clara County Parks running the recreation side, and the bay shoreline has agencies of its own. A community lake answers to its association. Ask them before you order anything, because they decide whether a structure, a railing or a fence near the bank is allowed at all. Near water we use galvanized, stainless or aluminum parts, since damp air finds bare steel fast.

Do not count on it. The reservoirs here are public water supply, and the agency that owns the water decides what may be built.

My yard backs onto a creek. Can it be fenced?
Often yes, but creek banks commonly carry setbacks or easements. We check with the city and the water agency before setting a post.
